Seguridad nocturna
The Columbine High School massacre occurred on Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at Columbine High School in unincorporated Jefferson County near Denver and Littleton, Colorado, United States. Two teenage students, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, carried out a shooting rampage, killing twelve fellow students and a teacher before committing suicide. It is considered to be the worst school shooting, and is the second deadliest attack on a school, in U.S. history.
The massacre led to questions regarding gun control and the availability of assault weapons in the U.S. There was a great deal of concern related to the role of violent movies and video games in American society. Soon, other topics of focus began to surface which included the nature of high school cliques and bullying. Several of the victims who were believed to have been killed due to their religious beliefs became the inspiration of others, notably Christians, and led some to decry the decline of religion in public education and society in general. Another result of the shooting was the greater emphasis placed on school security. The massacre eventually led to a moral panic aimed at goth culture, heavy metal music, and violent video games. These stories are part of an occasional series that looks at violence that erupted in Denver in 1993.
A second chance for young felons
Onesimo Vigil sits on a relative's porch, sipping a Wild Cherry Pepsi, savoring the luxuries of life on the outside: the richness of homemade enchiladas; the joy of waking up to a bouncing, squealing niece he calls Boo; the freedom of breathing in fresh air whenever he pleases.

About The Denver Safe City Office
After the now infamous ‘Summer of Violence', citizens and civic leaders began meeting to address the issue of youth-related violence. As a result of community input and concern, former Mayor Webb and the Denver City Council created Denver 's Safe City Office (SCO) whose mission was to help prevent/reduce violence by and against youth. SCO began operating Denver 's curfew, grant allocation and youth employment programs in 1994 and has since become an integral part of Denver 's public safety plan while expanding its programs to better serve Denver 's youth and families. SCO partners with government, private, civic, business, non-profit and community based organizations to serve nearly 4,000 youth/families each year. SCO continues to operate the Curfew program as well as the Municipal Juvenile Diversion program for Denver . These programs help to ‘divert' youth away from the juvenile justice system by providing the youth/families with the opportunity to engage in services designed to address the root causes of the behavior. SCO also offers prevention programs designed to keep youth from becoming involved in the juvenile justice system by providing programs focused on positive youth development. A list of SCO programs along with a brief description is included below.
